(Apart from anything else, it makes him try to honour his gambling debts.) Frankly, he's not much of a natural leader; the only way he knows to "inspire" his followers is by rigidly following the "correct" course of action. Sometimes, this works - at least with the small band that he currently leads. All of this came to something of a head when he was hired by a Duke to inspect the state of fortifications in a backwards patch of Brittany, and he managed to fall out with a local knight whose manor he considered not to fit the estate's legal standing. Shortly after he'd finished saying his piece, he and his men were riding for the next estate with a pack of men-at-arms on their heels. The next estate, by chance, belonged to the Lady who he'd met at a dinner the night before, who even Eberhardt had realised didn't get on with their host, and who had heard from one of her escort - a forester - about Eberhardt's love of gambling. She met him on the road before her house with a ragged but substantial band of retainers, armed peasants, and foresters. The knight and his men were five minutes behind. She offered him a bet; if she could turn the knight away without bloodshed, he would serve as her champion. If she couldn't, he could arm himself and his men from her armoury, and claim new horses from her stables. This was hardly a bet he could refuse. Then she rode forward, with her party, and met the knight. "What gives you the right to stop me, woman?" "This is my land, neighbour. Mine by right." "Your land? Hah, you don't even have a champion to fight on your behalf." "I do now. Neighbour. Do you wish it to be known that you invaded another's estates with sword in hand, and fought a woman and her sworn champion?"
