Background
----------
Robert is the latest offspring of a family of capable foresters who have 
long served the family of Lady Marta's late husband. After the latter's 
death, when Marta took to riding around the estate, she asked Robert to 
act as her escort; she rightly judged that his loyalty to the family was 
absolute - although there's more of sentiment to his view of her than she 
may realise. (That is "sentimental", incidentally, not "romantic".)

In fact, Marta's failure to notice Robert's sentimental tendency may yet 
prove slightly unfortunate. She is aware of his fondness for ballads, of 
course (and his decent singing voice), but his overwhelming instinct to 
leap to the defence of any person or creature in danger or pain could yet 
prove a dangerous surprise. Most of those who have observed him think 
that this is a matter of plain honour and hunter's pride - he's noted for 
spending hours tracking wounded animals to put them out of their misery - 
but in fact, the instinct may overcome formal loyalty at times.

Nonetheless, for the moment, Robert is proving a competent aide, adding 
weight to Marta's visits and inspections. He has picked up enough French 
(with her inflections!) to work with her, and he carries his weapons with 
assurance. (He is now actually growing somewhat rusty with some of his 
forester's skills.) His only problem, perhaps, as a bodyguard is that 
his weapon skills are more oriented towards hunting than protection; he 
wields a shield with only moderate conviction, being happier with a long 
boar-spear or a hunting bow.
