He became something of an all- round rogue, with a wide range of frankly mediocre skills, and a willingness to do whatever he had to in order to live. He's by no means a vicious fellow, and he's certainly never killed for money, but he has a rather uncaring attitude to life and death. (He's a medieval proletarian - what do you expect?) This has kept him cheerful through recent events. His last career involved by-passing various tiresome tolls and duties imposed by crown and nobility, especially on river-based trade. Basically, he and his large group of friends would ship valuables in hidden compartments in shipping barrels, or move them on and off boats as seemed appropriate. This actually made him quite popular with many people, except for those employed to collect tolls and duties. The forces of law eventually caught up with the smuggling band; torturing names and locations out of each prisoner, they soon reduced Abel's large group of friends to a small group of friends. Abel, lucky or alert, got out the rear window of an inn as the men-at-arms were coming in the front door, and decided to lie low for a while. Then he remembered that some of his best (if strangest) customers didn't seem to care much about the laws of the nobility. Getting in touch with some grogs he knew, he discovered that a bunch of those wizards were forming a new holding over in Brittany. Presumably, they'll have a need for reliable supplies of exotic goods - and a strong, willing arm rarely goes amiss, either. Not that honest employment exactly appeals, but it can have its temporary advantages.
