However, his father eventually got sick of him forgetting what he was supposed to be doing, wandering off in mid-hunt, talking to imaginary friends (some of whom, he had a nasty suspicion, weren't imaginary), and generally being too damned odd by half. (The neighbours were beginning to notice, too, which is saying something in a medieval forest.) So he sought alternative employment for the lad. Off- loading him on the covenant at Carnac seemed somehow appropriate. In fact, Zane has turned out to be a competent sort of archer/hunter/general dogsbody, with a useful talent for dowsing and a knack for predicting the weather. (He also turned out to be somewhat susceptible to magical control, which is something that wizards can rarely find it in their hearts to complain about.) However, the wizards at Carnac have now sent him off to help form the nucleus of the new covenant's staff. Perhaps they thought that he would help establish the wells and such that the new establishment would need. Or perhaps they were just sick of him forgetting what he was supposed to be doing, wandering off in mid-hunt, talking to imaginary friends...
